Dr. Alpha Alexander selected for Ohio Sports Hall of Fame
Alpha Alexander, a 1976 College of Wooster alumna and national leader in sports has been selected for induction to the Ohio Sports Hall of Fame. The organization's induction banquet is set for Saturday, July 26, at Dayton Convention Center.
After earning her Ph.D. with distinction at Temple University, Alexander joined the Women's Sports Foundation as director of community projects. She then joined the YWCA, starting as the director for health promotion services in San Francisco, and later earned promotion to the director of advocacy health promotions for the national YWCA.
One of Alexander's biggest accomplishments took place in 1992 when she was one of the four founders of the Black Women in Sport Foundation, an organization that supports the involvement of Black women and girls in all aspects of sport. The organization offers educational and athletic instruction to girls, with focus on those attending schools in disenfranchised neighborhoods in the Philadelphia area. She was a board member for the United States Olympic Committee and chaired the member services task force subcommittee. She established The Race Against Racism, an event that still exists today.
Alexander's accomplishments have led to numerous prestigious honors. Some of those include the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, an Olympic Shield Award, a Wooster Distinguished Alumni Award, induction to the W Association Hall of Fame, a Power of Sport Award from the Institute of Sport and Social Justice, and she was named one of the 100 Most Influential Student-Athletes in History by the NCAA.
At Wooster, Alexander played basketball, lacrosse, tennis, and volleyball. She helped developed a track and field program for women and served as president of the Women's Athletic Association.
Tickets to the induction banquet are $95. Call the Ohio Sports Hall of Fame at 812-430-2725 to purchase tickets.
